Turnip Leaf and Small Fish Furikake

Ever wonder how turnip leaves and Shirasu (baby sardines) can go hand-in-hand?

Turnips are small, white, globe-shaped roots that comes with edible leaves. They are easily within reach from fall to winter so it is now the perfect season to source for fresh ones at the supermarket! The turnip greens used in this recipe are Japanese turnips, whereby the cultivation account goes back to the Pacific War when food was scarce.

You’ll be surprised that turnip greens contains wholesome goodness such as vitamins A, C, and K as well as folate and calcium. We’ve mentioned quite a bit about turnips, and what about Shirasu you may ask? Turnip Leaf and Small Fish Furikake

Please enjoy the Japanese-style soft furikake that you can deliciously eat with hot rice. This recipe is very healthy, so please make and enjoy it with your family!

Ingredients
  

  • 4 pieces Turnip Leaves
  • 2 tbsp Baby Sardines
  • Sesame Oil in an appropriate amount to your reference
  • 2 tbsp White Sesame Seeds
  • A pinch Salt
  • 1 tbsp Sake
  • 2 tsp Mirin
  • 2 tsp Soy Sauce

Instructions
 

  • Wash the turnip leaves. After that, boil them swiftly and chop them.
  • Put sesame oil in a frying pan. Then, add turnip leaves, baby sardines, and salt. Fry them well.
  • Add seasoning with ★ and fry until the water is gone.
  • Remove the frying pan from the heat and mix the furikake sesame seeds to complete.

Notes and Tips

  • Turnip leaves are rich in nutrients such as β-carotene, vitamin C, and folic acid. The turnip leaves have a little astringency, so you can enjoy it more deliciously by boiling it quickly.
